Biography

Portuguese-American conductor, producer, podcaster and educator Jacomo Bairos has emerged as a dynamic and creative leader who has defined himself through eclectic programming, genre-bending collaborations, artistic excellence, community and institution building, as well as education initiatives infused with mindful and wellness practices.

Described in the press as “thrilling,” "inspirational,” and “world-class,” Bairos is in demand with esteemed orchestras around the world, collaborates regularly with Grammy and Award winning artists, and annually commissions a wide-range of composers, artists and innovative projects.

Recent and upcoming engagements include the Boston Pops, the Metropol Orkest of the Netherlands, the Cincinnati Pops, as well the San Francisco, Singapore, St. Louis,  Atlanta, Houston and Virginia Symphony Orchestras. Collaborations with Grammy and Award winning artists of all genres include J’Nai Bridges, Conrad Tao, Jennifer Koh, as well as Wycleff Jean, PJ Morton, Jacob Collier, Kishi Bashi, Corey Henry, Angelique Kidjo and Jon Batiste to name a few. 

Along with composer Sam Hyken, Bairos is the Artistic Director, Conductor and Co-Founder for Nu Deco Ensemble, Miami’s 21st century, genre-bending chamber orchestra. Since its inception in 2015, Nu Deco Ensemble has exploded onto Miami’s eclectic musical scene captivating audiences, holistically engaging with its community and fusing innovative, genre-bending orchestral performances and collaborations with the highest levels of musical artistry. Having released 6 self-produced albums since 2019, garnering over a million streams on Spotify and over 4 million views on Youtube, Nu Deco celebrates living composers, reimagines all genres of music, and collaborates with a wide range of diverse musical guests, composers, choreographers, dancers, and mixed media artists.

In Media, Bairos hosts Nu Deco Unfiltered, a podcast that dives deep into the lives of dynamic and award-winning artists, trailblazing composers and forward thinking industry leaders while also exploring life wisdom and inspiration gleaned from their storied careers. Bairos also hosts Nu Deco’s “Live-Streamed” concert performances as well as their Imagination Series which reach 15k kids annually in both live and virtual online performances. A Chopra Certified meditation coach, Bairos is also lead mindfulness and wellness instructor for the members of Nu Deco NXT, a new youth ensemble molded after Nu Deco’s innovative and collective spirit. 

From 2013 - 2020, Bairos was the Music Director for the Amarillo Symphony. Presiding over unprecedented artistic and fiscal growth and consistently sold-out performances, Bairos enacted numerous new community initiatives and programs. In Bairos’ 8-year tenure, he instituted the first ever composers-in-residence with Chris Rogerson, commissioned dozens of composers and artists, established the WTAMU young composers initiated that workshopped and performed the music of university students, established education programs such as Class Act, and Symphony Kids, and created the highly successful Happy Holiday Pops series.

A graduate of The Juilliard School in Performance and the Peabody Institute for Conducting, Bairos has performed, recorded, and toured the world with the New York Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony, and the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops. Bairos’s conducting mentors have included Gustav Meier, Kurt Masur, Robert Spano and Jorma Panula. 

Bairos makes his home in Miami, FL with his Carolina dog Sophie.
